Dr. Alan Lazar offers advanced arthroscopic surgery as an alternative orthopedic surgical solution. Dr. Lazar uses arthroscopic surgery to look inside a joint in order to diagnose and repair orthopedic injuries and disorders. As with any minimally invasive surgery, because only small incisions are used and the joint is not "opened" orthopedic arthroscopy is safe and provides less pain and downtime for the patient versus traditional open surgery.
During arthroscopic surgery, a camera attached to a fiber optic light is inserted into the joint through a small incision. The camera shows a picture of the inside of the joint on a television monitor in the operating room. Dr. Lazar uses fluid pumped through the joint to aid his visibility and to clear debris from the joint. One or more additional incisions are made to insert the instruments designed to treat the specific condition.
Dr. Lazar performs an arthroscopic procedure called an osteochondral autograft transfer, or OATS. This procedure involves harvesting bone and intact cartilage from a less weight bearing position of the knee to fill in the weigh-bearing portion.
