Joint Reconstruction
The hip and knee are the most common joints for reconstruction. Why? Unlike the shoulder, for example, the hip and knee are weight-bearing joints. If there is any way the joint can be preserved or reconstructed, this option is usually chosen. However, when nonsurgical treatment and arthroscopy are not adequate to provide relief to a joint injury or disorder, Dr. Alan Lazar is Southeast Florida's respected expert at performing hip and knee joint reconstruction surgery.
About Joint Reconstruction Surgery
Dr. Lazar performs joint reconstruction while the patient is under general or regional anesthesia in the hospital operating room. He makes an incision at the joint and then carefully removes the minimum amount of bone necessary to allow free motion. The more bone that remains, the more stable the joint. Ligament attachments are preserved as much as possible. In some types of reconstruction, both bones of the joint are reshaped, and a disk of material is placed between the bones to prevent the bones rubbing together.
Recovery from Joint Reconstruction Surgery
Length of hospital stay depends on the joint affected. In the absence of complications, a typical stay is only a few days. After surgery, Dr. Lazar prescribes physical therapy as part of the recovery plan. Length of recovery time varies widely and depends on the extent of the surgery performed and multiple individual factors. However, people usually can return to most if not all of their desired activities in about three months after most major joint reconstructions.
In addition to joint reconstruction, Dr. Lazar performs a surgical procedure called an osteotomy on the ankle joint and open reconstruction of the shoulder if an injury is too severe for arthroscopy or Regenerative Injection Therapy with platelets and stem cells.
For conditions of the knee that are too severe for minimally invasive or non-surgical treatments, Dr. Lazar performs the McKay procedure and a corrective osteotomy.
